How to burn candles correctly?

Read our recommendations

Caring for a candle is not rocket science, but a few tricks can work wonders. To ensure our KRAB candles bring you joy for as long as possible, burn cleanly, and look great even after several uses, we have prepared this brief guide for you.

1. The first burn is crucial

Paraffin has its “memory.” When burning a candle for the first time, let it burn until the paraffin melts all the way to the edges (forming a “pool”).

  • Why do this? If you blow out the candle too soon, a tunnel will form around the wick, which will deepen with each subsequent burn, leaving unused paraffin on the sides.

2. The wick is the key to success

Before each burn (yes, even the very first one), trim the wick to a length of approximately 5–7 mm.

  • How to do it? Use wick trimmers or regular scissors.
  • Result: The candle will not smoke, the flame will be stable, and an unsightly “mushroom” of unburned carbon will not form on the wick.

3. Where to (not) place the candle

Drafts are the enemy of any flame. If a candle is in the path of moving air, the flame will flicker, soot the glass (if you are burning a candle in a glass container), and the candle will burn unevenly.

  • Tip: Always place the candle on a stable, non-flammable surface, out of reach of children, pets, and flammable materials. Follow the safety instructions, which are provided on each of our candles in the form of pictograms.

4. How to extinguish correctly

Instead of blowing out the candle, we recommend using an extinguisher or carefully dipping the wick into the melted wax and then straightening it again.

  • Advantage: You will avoid unpleasant smoke and the smell of burnt wick, which would overpower the fragrance (for scented candles) or the clean atmosphere.

5. Cleanliness is half the battle (for candles)

Keep the wax pool clean. Match debris, wick trimmings, or dust do not belong in the candle. They can act as a “second wick,” leading to overheating of the container or uneven burning.

💡 Quick tips for a safe atmosphere:

  • Maximum burn time: Do not let the candle burn for more than 4 hours at a time.
  • When is it time for a new one? When there is about 1–1.5 cm of paraffin left, do not light the candle anymore. This protects the surface from heat.
  • Storage: Store KRAB candles in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight to preserve the paraffin’s color and shape.

We believe that with these steps, you will enjoy the ritual of lighting KRAB candles to the fullest. Let your home be illuminated by the right light!

How to use candle spikes?

Read our recommendations

Preparing an Advent wreath or decoration is a joy, but attaching candles can sometimes be a bit tricky. To ensure your KRAB candles look great and bring you joy for as long as possible, we have prepared this brief guide on how to work with spikes like a professional.

How to use candle spikes correctly and safely

The high-quality paraffin in our candles deserves gentle handling. Just follow these five steps:

  1. Acclimatization is key. Before use, let the candle warm up to room temperature. Cold paraffin (e.g., after bringing it in from a hallway or car) is very brittle and can easily crack under pressure.
  2. Stable base. First, firmly and straightly secure the spike into the wreath, base, or holder. Only place the candle on once the spike is completely stable.
  3. With care and vertically. Insert the candle slowly and vertically downwards. Avoid sideways pressure and do not wiggle the candle – this can damage its internal structure and cause it to break.
  4. Size matters. Use spikes with a thin tang (ideally 1.8–2.5 mm). Spikes that are too thick or too long act like a wedge inside the candle and can permanently damage it.
  5. A little trick for easier handling. If the candle is difficult to put on, gently warm the bottom of the candle (e.g., with a hairdryer) or apply a drop of cooking oil to the tip of the spike. It will slide on like butter!

Why does it matter?

Proper attachment ensures the candle stands straight, does not drip, and most importantly – remains intact and safe throughout the burning process.

Tip from KRAB: If the spike is going through very hard material, it’s best to pre-drill a hole with a thin drill bit or a heated nail. This saves the spike and your nerves.

Enjoy a beautiful atmosphere with our candles.
