How to burn candles properly?
Check out our recommendations
Candle care is not a science, but a few tricks can work wonders. To ensure that our KRAB candles last as long as possible, burn cleanly and look great even after several lightings, we have prepared this brief guide for you.
1. The first burn is crucial
Paraffin has its own “memory.” When lighting the candle for the first time, allow it to burn until the wax melts all the way to the edges, creating a so-called pool.
- Why do this? If you blow out the candle too early, a tunnel will form around the wick. With every subsequent burn, this tunnel will deepen, and the remaining wax on the walls will go to waste.
2. The wick is the key to success
Before every single burn (yes, even the very first one), trim the wick to a length of approximately 5–7 mm.
- How to do it? Use a wick trimmer or regular scissors.
- The result: The candle won’t smoke, the flame will remain stable, and an unsightly carbon “mushroom” won’t form on the wick.
3. Where (not) to place your candle
Drafts are the enemy of every flame. If the candle is exposed to moving air, the flame will flicker, soot the glass (if burning in a container), and burn unevenly.
- Tip: Always place the candle on a stable, heat-resistant surface out of reach of children, pets, and flammable materials. Follow the safety instructions found on every one of our candles in the form of pictograms
4. How to extinguish properly
Instead of blowing out the candle, we recommend using a snuffer or gently dipping the wick into the melted wax and straightening it again.
- Advantage: You avoid unpleasant smoke and the smell of a burnt wick, which could overpower the fragrance (in scented candles) or disrupt the clean atmosphere.
5. Cleanliness is half the battle (for candles)
Keep the melt pool clean. Match remnants, pieces of wick, or dust do not belong in the candle. They can act as a “second wick,” leading to overheating of the container or uneven burning.
💡 Quick tips for a safe:
- Maximum burn time: Do not leave the candle burning for more than 4 consecutive hours.
- When is it time for a new one? Once about 1–1.5 cm of wax remains, do not light the candle anymore. This protects the surface underneath from the heat.
- Storage: Store KRAB candles in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight so the wax retains its color and shape.
We believe that with these steps, you will enjoy your KRAB candle-lighting ritual to the fullest. Let your home shine in just the right light!

How to use candle spikes?

Preparing an Advent wreath or decoration is a joy, but attaching candles can sometimes be a bit of a challenge. To keep your KRAB candles looking great and giving you joy for as long as possible, we have prepared this brief guide on how to work with the spikes like a pro.
How to properly and safely use candle spikes
The high-quality paraffin of our candles deserves gentle handling. Simply follow these five steps:
- Acclimatization is key. Allow the candle to warm up to room temperature before use. Cold wax (e.g., after being brought in from a hallway or a car) is very brittle and could easily crack under pressure.
- A stable base. First, fix the candle spike firmly and straight into the wreath, base, or holder. Do not mount the candle until the spike is completely still.
- Gently and vertically. Push the candle down slowly and perfectly straight. Avoid lateral pressure and do not wiggle the candle – you risk disrupting its internal structure, which could cause it to break apart.
- Size matters. Use candle spikes with a thin pin (ideally $1.8\text{–}2.5\text{ mm}$). Pins that are too thick or long act like a wedge inside the candle body and can cause irreversible damage.
- A little trick for easier handling. If the candle is difficult to push down, gently warm the bottom part of the candle (e.g., with a hair dryer) or coat the tip of the spike with a drop of cooking oil. It will go smoothly like butter!
Why does it matter?
Proper attachment ensures the candle stands straight, does not drip excessively, and most importantly – remains intact and safe throughout burning.
Tip from KRAB: If the spike has to go through a very hard material, it is better to pre-drill a hole using a thin drill bit or a heated nail. This will save both the spike and your nerves
Enjoy a beautiful atmosphere with our candles.
